  • The SAFB 82d Training Wing provides technical training to about 80,000 Airmen, Soliders, Sailors, Marines and International Students
  • SAFB is the Air Force’s fourth busiest airfield
  • Almost every plane in the USAF is maintained by a maintainer trained through SAFB
  • The 80th Flying Training Wing generates 66,000 sorties annually while training combat pilots for the U.S. and NATO allies.

SAFB is Unique

The Sheppard Military Affairs Committee (SMAC) works hard to promote the uniqueness of Sheppard Air Force Base to the overall mission of the USAF. Sheppard AFB is one of few bases to house two wings – the 80th Flying Training Wing and the 82nd Training Wing. This makes Sheppard the largest and most diverse training base in Air Education and Training Command. It is the only base that is home to both technical and flying training. The fusion of flying, maintenance and civil training create a unique synergy between units.

Sheppard AFB operates a joint-use airfield with the Wichita Falls Municipal Airport. The community benefits greatly from this arrangement. One of the few instances in the United States, this joint-use is another example of our excellent community/base relationship.

Room to Grow

Unlike many bases through out the country, Sheppard Air Force Base is not land-locked and has room for expansion. This is a valuable asset as Sheppard AFB vies for new missions. SMAC is working to mitigate and prevent further encroachment by public utilities and state commissions.

Infrastructure / Space

With the move of medical training, valuable and recently renovated training space that is close to the flightline will be come available including: eight buildings, 202 modern classrooms and two auditoriums.

In addition, Congress has approved project funding for new ENJJPT training facilities. This construction project will provide state-of-the-art facilities for this international training program.

Community Support

Wichita Falls is known through out Air Force leadership for being one of the most supportive military communities. Our community recognizes that the success of the base’s critical training mission is a matter of national security. Our community whole-heartedly backs our bas7e. Sheppard has received fewer than 15 noise complaints since 2006, despite having the fourth-busiest airfield in the Air Force.

Global Perspective

The world wide missions of Sheppard AFB are an integral part of the Air Force with detachments deployed in over 60 locations across the globe and providing technical training for over 80,000 annually, there is no doubt that what happens at SAFB today makes an impact around the world.

ABOUT SHEPPARD

Named in honor of Senator Morris Sheppard, former chairman of the Senate Military Affairs Committee, Sheppard Air Force Base was activated Oct.17, 1941 and provided aircrew and aircraft mechanics training during World War II. Today, Sheppard is the largest and most diverse training base in Air Education and Training Command–the only Air Force base that is home to both technical and flying training.

The 82d Training Wing is the host wing at Sheppard and provides technical training to about 80,000 Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and international students each year – more than all other Air Force training wings combined. Its four training groups manage more than 1,000 classes taught at Sheppard and at 60 locations across the globe. The 82d Training Group, known as Aircraft Maintenance University, provides aircraft maintenance and conventional and nuclear munitions maintenance training. The 782d Training Group trains specialists in telecommunications, civil engineering, fuels and vehicle operations. The 882d Training Group provides a full spectrum of medical training, including nursing, dental, biomedical equipment repair, pharmacy and medical readiness. The 982d Training Group provides unique weapon systems training at 45 detachments and operating locations worldwide. These four training groups combine to produce about 80,000 technical training graduates per year. Providing support for Team Sheppard are the 82nd Medical Group, which serves 20,000 beneficiaries, and the 82d Mission Support Group, which provides communications, personnel, security and infrastructure support to the base.

The 80th Flying Training Wing conducts the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT) Program sponsored by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. This unique program, which began at Sheppard in 1981, provides fighter-oriented pilot training for 13 NATO countries including Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Each year over 200 pilots receive their wings through the ENJJPT program. In addition, over 150 pilots selected for fighter aircraft learn critical combat skills through the Introduction to Fighter Fundamentals program.
